MOST REV. GABRIEL EDOE KUMORDJI, SVD

Bishop. Gabriel Edoe Kumordji, SVD was born on March 24, 1956 at Amamomo in the Odododio Constituency in Accra to Mrs. Severina Tsotsoo Kumordji and Leonard David Kumordji all of blessed memory. He had his primary school at Amamomo (2) Primary School and Sacred Heart Parish Primary School in Korle-Worko, Accra, and middle school at Mamprobi Sempe 7 at Mamprobi in Accra. He had his secondary school education at St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School in Accra. He started his priestly formation in 1976 at St. Victor’s Major Seminary in Tamale and made his first Religious profession on September 8, 1980 at St. George’s Parish – Koforidua. He professed his Final Vows on September 8, 1984 at Sacred Heart Parish at Derby Avenue in Accra. He was ordained priest by Most Rev. Dominic Andoh, Archbishop emeritus of Accra on July 14, 1985 at the Holy Spirit Cathedral in Accra.

Most Rev. Gabriel Kumordji served as an Assistant Priest from 1985-1989 at St Augustine Parish, Asesewa in the Eastern Region. It was part of the then Accra Diocese. He was Pastor of St Maria Goretti Parish at Battor in 1989- 1991. He went for studies in Loyola University in Chicago, USA from 1991 to 1993, where he obtained Masters in Pastoral Studies and Post Graduate Certificate in Religious Formation from St. Louis University in Missouri. On his returned to Ghana in 1993, he was appointed Prefect of SVD Seminarians and lecturer in Pastoral Theology, Homiletic, Pastoral Counseling, and Missiology at St. Victor’s Major Seminary in Tamale from 1993 to 2001.

He again went for studies in Los Angeles from 2001 to 2005, where he acquired Master’s Degree and PhD in Inter-Cultural Studies from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California.

On June 22, 2005, Most Rev. Gabriel Edoe Kumordji, SVD was elected and appointed the Ghana Provincial Superior of the Divine Word Missionaries (SVD). On 12th June 2007, he was appointed by the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI as Apostolic Prefect of Donkorkrom. Before his appointment as Apostolic Prefect, he was the President of Conference of Major Superiors’ of Religious Men in Ghana.

On the 19th February 2007 he was appointed Apostolic Vicar of Donkorkrom Apostolic Vicariate with an Ecclesiastical character and was ordained bishop on the 19th April 2007 at Donkorkrom. As member of the Ghana Bishops’ Conference, he served as Episcopal chairman of PMS, Clergy and Religious. He is now the Episcopal co-chairman of the Laity Council in Ghana. Most Rev. Gabriel Edoe Kumordji, SVD is the Board chairman of Quality Insurance Company (QIC) and a Board member of the Quality Life Assurance Company (QLAC). He is the Episcopal Chairman of the Ghana Bishops’ Conference strategic Investment Department and chairman of the Finance Committee of the Ghana Bishops’ Conference. He is a member of the Governing Council of the Catholic University College of Fiapre in Sunyani and founding member of the Forum of Ghana Catholic CEOs and Business people.

On March 16, 2017, His Holiness Pope Francis appointed him as the second Bishop of Keta-Akatsi Diocese following the Canonical resignation of Most Rev. Anthony Kwami Adanuty, as first Bishop of the Diocese. His motto for the new task is “Adveniat Regnum Tuum” (Thy Kingdom Come)
